Hurricanes like Helene are deadly when they strike and keep killing for years to come

A recent study has revealed that hurricanes in the United States are far deadlier in the long run than previously estimated by the government. The study, published in the journal Nature, found that the average storm hitting the U.S. leads to the premature deaths of 7,000 to 11,000 people over a 15-year period. This significantly surpasses the government’s official count of immediate and direct deaths, which averages at 24 per hurricane.

Experts have highlighted that the impacts of hurricanes, such as Hurricane Helene, extend beyond the initial destruction. Stanford University climate economist Solomon Hsiang, a co-author of the study, emphasised that the long-term effects of these storms result in a continuous increase in mortality rates over several years. The study delved into the concept of excess mortality, taking into account the unexpected rise in death rates following 501 storms that hit the U.S. between 1930 and 2015.

The research findings indicate a recurring pattern of elevated death rates post-storm, suggesting a delayed but sustained impact on public health. Factors such as stress, environmental changes, financial constraints due to storm-related costs, and infrastructure damage have been identified as contributors to the prolonged increase in mortality rates. It was noted that the effects of hurricanes are often unnoticed as the cause of death may be attributed to other common health issues, making it challenging to directly link them to the storms.

Despite expectations that the spike in death rates would subside in the short term, the study revealed a surprising continuation of increased mortality rates over a 15-year period. Researchers observed a steady trickle of fatalities each month post-storm, with an estimated 55,000 to 88,000 excess deaths attributed to storms annually. This accumulates to between 3.6 and 5.2 million storm-related deaths over the 85-year study period, surpassing the number of fatalities from car accidents.

The study underscores the significant public health threat posed by hurricanes, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of their long-lasting effects on communities. The researchers stressed the importance of acknowledging the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on human health, emphasising the vulnerability of societies to weather-related shocks. The study serves as a stark reminder of the need for proactive measures to mitigate the long-term consequences of severe weather events.
