John Amos’ Cause of Death Revealed a Day After Son Announced Good Times Star had Died at 84
The cause of death for John Amos has been unveiled, just over a month after his passing on August 21 at the age of 84. The legendary Good Times actor is reported to have died from congestive heart failure at a hospital in Los Angeles, according to a death certificate acquired by People.
No other significant medical conditions were mentioned as contributing factors, and no postmortem examination was conducted. While Amos had passed away in August, the news of his death was only made public recently by his son, Kelly Christopher Amos, a film producer.
In a statement released on October 1, Kelly expressed his heartfelt sadness, stating, “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
The certificate reveals that Amos’ remains were cremated on August 30, nine days after his demise. Kelly was identified as the individual who informed the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health about his father’s passing and was also noted as the one in possession of the ashes, with the place of disposition listed as Kelly’s address.
Approximately a year before his death, Kelly had been arrested on suspicion of making “terroristic threats” against his sister, Shannon Amos, who had previously accused him of not providing proper care to their father during his health struggles. An investigation into Shannon’s claims of elder abuse against Kelly was opened by the Los Angeles Police Department in March but was ultimately closed in a month due to insufficient evidence.
Reacting to her father’s death, Shannon revealed that she and the rest of the family only learned of his passing “through the media like so many of you,” expressing devastation and many unanswered questions about the circumstances of his death.
In a poignant Instagram post, Shannon described the difficulties the family faced in navigating the emotions and uncertainties surrounding John Amos’ passing, emphasizing the peace in knowing that her father is finally free. She also mentioned an unsettling incident involving someone pretending to be her in the hospital on the night of her father’s death.
John Amos, renowned for his role as James Evans Sr in the Seventies sitcom Good Times, also showcased his talent in the 1977 mini-series Roots, as well as the popular film series Coming to America.
