Keir Starmer has reimbursed more than £6,000 worth of gifts and hospitality he had received since taking office at Number 10 following a controversy over ministerial donations. The Prime Minister is covering the expenses for six Taylor Swift tickets, four race tickets, and a clothing rental deal with a high-end designer favoured by his wife, Victoria. This move comes after Starmer and other Cabinet members, who pledged to “clean up” British politics, faced criticism for accepting tens of thousands of pounds in freebies from affluent donors.
In response to the backlash, the Prime Minister has committed to revamping the rules regarding hospitality for ministers to ensure greater transparency about the offerings. A Downing Street spokesperson mentioned on Wednesday that Starmer has initiated a new set of guidelines on gifts and hospitality, which will be part of the updated ministerial code. As a proactive measure, ahead of the publication of the new code, Starmer has personally covered the cost of several items that will be disclosed in the upcoming register of members’ interests.
Among the gifts repaid by Starmer are four Taylor Swift tickets from Universal Music Group amounting to £2,800, two tickets from the Football Association costing £598, and four tickets to Doncaster Races from Arena Racing Corporation at £1,939. Additionally, an £839 clothing rental agreement with Edeline Lee, a designer recently adorned by his wife at London Fashion Week, along with one hour of hair and makeup services, has also been settled by the Prime Minister.
The efforts to address the donations row and ensure transparency in ministerial conduct demonstrate Starmer’s commitment to upholding integrity and accountability in government.
