Conservative Party MP Kemi Badenoch has launched a scathing attack on Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon regarding the placement of a trans rapist in a women’s prison. Badenoch made the accusation during her speech at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, claiming that “the SNP put a sex offender in a women’s prison”. The controversial move of the trans rapist, originally named Adam Graham but later identified as Karen White, raised public outcry leading to the individual being transferred to a male prison.
The decision to place the rapist in a women’s prison was made by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), yet opposition parties placed blame on Sturgeon, accusing her of mishandling the situation and using female pronouns to refer to the individual. This incident occurred following the rejection of the SNP Government’s gender recognition reform bill by Tory Scottish Secretary Alister Jack, a bill aimed at simplifying gender transitions.
Badenoch, known for her recent clash with actor David Tennant on transgender rights, took the opportunity to criticise former First Minister Sturgeon for her handling of the matter. During her speech, Badenoch highlighted the importance of standing up for women’s rights and expressed her satisfaction that Sturgeon is no longer in power. She stated, “For too long government stayed silent as women were sacked for saying that a man cannot be a woman. I fought for them while Labour called them bigots.”
