Parents warned of the hidden gambling dangers in on-line gaming

Parents are being urged to be vigilant about the potential gambling risks hidden in their children’s video games as online gaming grows in popularity among youngsters. Figures reveal that 83% of children are involved in gaming, which can be both entertaining and educational. However, there are lurking dangers such as gambling, cyber-bullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and excessive screen time.

Emre Aksu, a Game Critic at 1337 Games, emphasises the importance for parents to take proactive steps in protecting their children while they enjoy their favourite games. Aksu provides crucial advice on creating a safer gaming environment, including understanding gambling-related risks like in-game purchases and luck-based gaming mechanics, monitoring game content ratings to avoid exposure to violent or inappropriate material, and reviewing voice chat settings to limit interactions to friends only.

Aksu also highlights the significance of being cautious of in-game microtransactions and staying vigilant against cyber-bullying threats. Parents are encouraged to educate their children on respectful behaviour online and the dangers of sharing personal information. Limiting screen time to prevent addiction and promoting eye safety by following the 20-20-20 rule – taking breaks every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds – are also recommended practices.

Parents are advised to set restrictions on gaming time and incorporate regular breaks to avoid the risk of addiction. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) suggests limiting children’s screen time to a maximum of two hours per day for better health outcomes. In addition, parents should be aware of potential eye strain and implement measures to protect their children’s vision.

It is crucial for parents to be well-informed about the risks associated with online gaming and to implement strategies to safeguard their children’s well-being while they engage in this popular activity. By staying informed and taking proactive steps, parents can ensure that their children enjoy the benefits of gaming while minimising the associated risks.
