A heartwarming story has emerged from Scotland where a mother selflessly donated her kidney to a stranger, ultimately saving her husband’s life. Susan McDonald made the incredible decision to donate her kidney to a stranger so that her husband Alan could receive a new kidney as well. The couple, both 60 years old, discovered that they were not a direct match for each other. However, they were able to participate in The UK Living Kidney Sharing Scheme, where patients can be matched with another pair so that each recipient receives a kidney from the other’s friend or family member.
The couple faced multiple setbacks, with the surgery being cancelled three times due to complications. Three weeks ago, they finally underwent the lifesaving transplant at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Susan expressed her unwavering commitment to helping her husband, stating, “I didn’t think twice about donating my kidney so Alan could get better. The system is really fantastic, it meant three people got life-saving operations which is really incredible.” Despite the challenges they faced, Susan and Alan praised the NHS teams for their excellent care and support throughout the process.
Alan initially hesitated to accept Susan’s kidney donation due to concerns for her own well-being. His struggle with kidney failure, stemming from complications with his diabetes, left him in constant pain and fatigue. After reassurances from doctors that Susan would make a full recovery, Alan agreed to the transplant. Both Susan and Alan are now on the road to recovery and are looking forward to a well-deserved holiday to celebrate their improved health.
Reflecting on the experience, Alan shared, “We also haven’t been able to do anything together since my health has not been good, so this opens up a new life for us. The first thing we are going to do when we are well enough is go on holiday, we can’t wait.” The couple, who have not travelled abroad in six years, are excited about the prospect of taking a trip together.
