Snap polls conducted post the vice presidential debate have shed light on how American voters perceived the performances of JD Vance and Tim Walz. The debate, likely the sole encounter between the candidates, took place in New York City on Tuesday night. Network pundits, irrespective of political leanings, generally agreed that the Ohio senator, Vance, appeared more confident, polished, and prepared compared to his Democratic counterpart, Walz.
However, a CBS/YouGov flash poll involving 1,630 viewers revealed a neck-and-neck race between the contenders. Results showed that 42% of respondents believed Vance emerged as the debate winner, with 41% backing Walz as the victor. A further 17% felt that the nominees performed equally well. Unlike the previous presidential debate characterised by attacks and falsehoods, 88% of survey respondents noted a “generally positive” tone in the VP debate.
During the debate, both candidates were perceived as more “reasonable” than “extreme,” with 74% attributing this quality to Walz and 65% to Vance. However, the event was not without its hitches. Walz admitted to inaccuracies regarding his presence during the Tiananmen Square protests, while Vance sidestepped questions about Trump’s election loss. Post-debate, both candidates experienced a surge in favorability ratings, with Vance’s increasing by nine percent and Walz’s by seven percent.
A CNN snap poll of 574 registered voters also indicated a close contest between Vance and Walz. 51% believed Vance outperformed Walz, contrasting with pre-debate expectations favouring Walz. The poll’s viewership skewed slightly towards Democratic alignment. Vance was perceived as more effective at defending his running mate, with 37% in agreement, compared to Walz’s 33%.
When assessing the candidates’ relatability, 48% found Walz to be more in touch with the average American, while 35% thought the same of Vance. Similarly, 48% believed Walz’s vision for America aligned more closely with theirs, compared to 39% for Vance. Ultimately, only one percent of viewers indicated a change in their voting preferences after watching the debate.
Preceding the debate, a Prolific poll for The Independent highlighted the significance of the vice presidential candidate in shaping the overall ticket’s success. Currently, Harris maintains a 2.6-point lead over Trump, as per recent national polling data. This continued analysis represents the dynamic shifts and considerations within the American electorate leading up to the November election.
