Topps Tiles, a leading retailer in the UK, has acknowledged the current challenges in the DIY market as it experiences a slowdown in overall sales for the year. Despite this, the company has managed to outperform the wider market during this period.
In its recent trading update to investors following the fourth quarter, Topps Tiles reported group sales of approximately £248 million for the year ending in September. This figure represents a 5.7% decrease compared to the previous year when the company achieved record-high revenues of £263 million. When considering like-for-like sales, which exclude the impact of new store openings, the sales decline was even sharper at 9.1%.
According to Topps Tiles, the sales environment remained extremely challenging throughout the year, particularly in the repair and maintenance sector where demand for more expensive renovation projects remained subdued. The company highlighted that households are still reluctant to undertake costly home improvement projects amid rising living costs and increased mortgage expenses.
Despite the tough market conditions, Topps Tiles noted that its performance was relatively better compared to some other retailers in the DIY sector. The company observed an estimated 10% to 15% decline in sales across the repair, maintenance, and improvement market overall. Earlier in the year, Topps Tiles made a strategic move by acquiring 30 stores and the brand of a tile supplier, CTD Tiles, for £9 million after the latter went into administration due to the downturn in the home improvement sector.
Rob Parker, the CEO of Topps Tiles, expressed satisfaction with how the company navigated the challenging market dynamics, attributing their resilience and ability to outperform to the dedication of their teams. Looking ahead, Parker acknowledged that macro-economic indicators point towards a potentially stronger market in 2025, although the exact timing and pace of recovery remain uncertain.
As Topps Tiles continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of the DIY market, its ability to weather challenges and maintain a competitive edge underscores its commitment to delivering quality products and services to customers across the UK.
