Vance is a better debater than Trump, Gretchen Whitmer says – but still thinks Walz triumphed

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer shared her views on the recent vice presidential debate, expressing her belief that JD Vance outperformed Donald Trump in terms of debating skills. Whitmer commended Vance’s debate performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, stating that Trump could have learned a thing or two from Vance’s debating prowess.

During the debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump faced criticism for his responses, including making false claims about Haitian immigrants and states “executing” babies. Despite Vance’s strong performance, Whitmer remained loyal to her party and ultimately declared that she believed the Democratic VP candidate, Tim Walz, emerged as the winner of the debate.

In the showdown between Walz and Vance, which took place in New York City, the candidates discussed key issues such as abortion, the economy, immigration, election integrity, and gun control in a relatively civil manner. Whitmer, a supporter of Walz, praised the Minnesota Governor for his performance, noting his strong showing during the debate.

Although Walz stumbled initially, particularly when questioned about his statements regarding the Tiananmen Square protests, he regained his composure and delivered impactful responses on various topics including abortion, the Capitol insurrection, and gun violence. Vance, known for his confident demeanour, remained composed throughout the debate, despite making false claims on certain issues.

Democratic governors Wes Moore, JB Pritzker, and Maura Healey voiced their support for Walz post-debate, commending him for his focus on issues and respectful conduct. While some political analysts and broadcasters felt that Vance narrowly outperformed Walz, a CBS poll indicated a close margin with 41 percent favouring Walz’s performance and 42 percent viewing Vance as the victor.

Whitmer highlighted the composure displayed by both candidates during the debate, contrasting it with the intensity of previous debates involving Trump and other politicians. Describing the debate as a clash between two Midwesterners, she praised Walz for his humility and performance.

In conclusion, the vice presidential debate between Walz and Vance showcased contrasting styles and perspectives, with both candidates making their cases on critical issues facing the nation. Whitmer’s insights shed light on the dynamics of the debate and the impressions left by the candidates on viewers and analysts alike.
