A small town in central Thailand is reeling from the tragic loss of 23 individuals who perished in a devastating school bus fire. The tight-knit community is now preparing for a mass funeral to honour the children and teachers who lost their lives in this horrific incident.
Residents of the town, along with monks, gathered at Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam, a Buddhist temple in Lan Sak town, Uthai Thani province, to receive the bodies of the victims. Loved ones of the deceased, who had travelled to Bangkok to help identify the severely burnt bodies, also returned with the remains.
The school attended by the children is located on the temple grounds, a common practice in rural Thailand. In the school’s assembly hall, a poignant scene unfolded as florists arranged white flowers in front of a row of coffins bearing pictures of the departed. Relatives of the victims placed food, snacks, and beverages on the coffins as a gesture of respect and to send blessings to the deceased.
The somber funeral is set to be attended by a representative of the royal family, the head of Thailand’s Privy Council, with King Maha Vajiralongkorn declaring a royal cremation ceremony next week for the victims. The bus fire, which claimed the lives of 39 students and teachers, has sparked concerns among parents about the safety of school trips.
Authorities are investigating possible negligence as a cause of the fire, with the driver facing charges of reckless driving and failure to assist others. The driver reported a malfunctioning front tire leading to a collision with a highway barrier, potentially igniting gas canisters on the bus. While the bus company owner claimed the gas cylinders met safety standards, the Department of Land Transport has initiated urgent inspections of all natural gas-fueled buses.
In response to the tragedy, safety regulations for school buses are being reviewed, with plans to mandate crisis management training for drivers and enhanced safety inspections. The community is coming together to mourn the loss of these young lives and seek justice for those who perished in the devastating bus fire.
