A third of Brits say they choose separate beds from their partner on holiday for a better night’s sleep

A recent report has highlighted that a significant number of British couples opt for separate beds when on holiday for a better night’s sleep. This trend, known as a “sleep divorce,” is gaining traction among a third of Brits who prefer sleeping alone while travelling, as per Hilton’s trend report for 2025.

While some travellers prioritise amenities like access to pools, sea views, or breakfast when booking a holiday, for others, having separate beds from their partners is key to ensuring a good night’s rest. According to a survey of 2,000 UK adults who have been on holiday, 59% claimed they sleep better alone, with 33% specifically seeking separate sleeping arrangements from their partners while travelling.

Interestingly, 19% of respondents said they book separate beds within the same room, while 11% opt for entirely different rooms altogether to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. Reasons cited for this choice vary, with 47% stating it guarantees better rest and 28% attributing it to differing sleep preferences between partners.

The trend of “sleep divorce” is predominant among younger generations, with Millennials and Generation Z (those born between 1980 and 2006) making up the largest group, at 31% booking separate beds. Generation Z, in particular, with those born between 1998 and 2008, prefers booking entirely separate rooms, as noted by 50% of respondents in this age category.

Interestingly, older adults aged 65 and above are also leaning towards booking separate sleeping arrangements from their partners while travelling. Over one-third (38%) of this age group mentioned a preference for different beds to ensure a good night’s sleep during their holidays.

The report also highlighted that many Brits use holidays as an opportunity to catch up on sleep, with just over half of respondents revealing they avoid setting alarms while away. Simon Vincent, Executive Vice President and President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Hilton, emphasised the importance of rest and relaxation, noting that Hilton is committed to providing exceptional stays for travellers worldwide.

As travel trends continue to evolve, the concept of “sleep divorce” is reshaping how couples approach holiday accommodation choices, with personal comfort and quality rest taking precedence for many travellers.
