Anti-abortion activists turn on Melania Trump after ‘disgusting’ memoir revelation: ‘She is wrong’

Anti-abortion activists have turned their criticism towards Melania Trump after revelations in her memoir that she supports abortion rights. The former First Lady defended a woman’s right to choose in her upcoming book, Melania, stating, “Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body?” This revelation has sparked backlash from anti-abortion Republicans who view her stance as contradictory to the values they uphold.

Melania’s husband, Donald Trump, played a significant role in appointing three conservative justices to the Supreme Court, leading to a 6-3 conservative majority that could potentially overturn Roe v Wade. However, Trump himself has stated that he would veto a national abortion ban, emphasising that the decision should be left to individual states. This conflicting position between the Trumps on such a divisive issue has raised eyebrows and drawn criticism from anti-abortion activists.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, denounced Melania’s support for abortion rights, calling it “anti-feminist” and contrary to their Catholic faith teachings. The backlash against Melania’s stance extended to conservative commentator and anti-abortion activist, Allie Stuckey, who described the former First Lady’s position as “disgusting” and “incoherent.” Stuckey emphasised the demoralising effect this could have on pro-life supporters, potentially affecting their enthusiasm for Trump.

The timing of Melania’s revelation, just 50 days before the election, has raised concerns within the GOP. Liz Mair, a GOP strategist, highlighted that this stance could further disillusion pro-life voters who were already feeling disenchanted. In a poll by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, abortion was identified as the second most important issue for voters. The ongoing debate around abortion and the differing positions within the Trump family could influence voter perceptions leading up to the election.

As the controversy unfolds, concerns about the impact on Trump’s electoral prospects have been raised. Kamala Harris, who has been vocal about holding Trump responsible for restricting access to abortion, is currently leading in national polls. Harris maintains a lead among women, while Trump holds an advantage among men. The contrasting views within the political landscape underscore the complexities surrounding reproductive rights and the diverse opinions within the electorate on this critical issue.

The Independent reached out to Melania Trump’s office for comment on the growing backlash from anti-abortion activists. Melania’s openness about her stance on abortion has stirred a heated debate within political circles and may have broader implications as the US election approaches. The evolving narrative around reproductive rights and the role of political figures in shaping policies continues to be a focal point of discussion as the election draws nearer.
