Blantyre mum tells how she turned her life around after beating the booze

A Blantyre mum has shared her inspiring story of turning her life around after conquering alcohol addiction. Catrina Slavin, 41, made significant changes in her life, including switching careers, establishing a support group, and launching a podcast focused on addiction, following her decision to quit drinking three years ago. She credits her entry into a 12-step recovery programme as the turning point that led her to a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.

Reflecting on her past, Catrina recalled how her issues with alcohol began during her teenage years in Blantyre. She admitted to struggling with binge drinking and constantly feeling the need to consume alcohol excessively. Despite not fitting the stereotypical image of an alcoholic, Catrina recognised that her relationship with alcohol was problematic and decided to seek help in September 2021 through the 12-step programme.

After quietly committing to sobriety, Catrina dedicated herself to improving her physical and mental well-being. She engaged in activities like hillwalking, embraced a role as a Recovery Rhythms coach using music for healing, and initiated a support group for individuals dealing with addiction in her community. Additionally, she launched a popular podcast, “Binge with Catrina”, to address various aspects of addiction, garnering listeners from 35 countries.

With her newfound drive and purpose, Catrina transitioned from a dissatisfying job at a call centre to a fulfilling career assisting young people aged 13-25 with addiction issues. Proud of her progress and the positive impact she’s making, Catrina emphasised the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding addiction, especially for mothers. She encouraged those struggling with addiction to seek help without shame, highlighting the available support for those willing to take the first step towards recovery.

Catrina’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of resilience and determination in overcoming personal challenges. Her story not only inspires hope but also sheds light on the significance of seeking assistance and fostering a supportive community in the recovery process.
