Eddlewood has recently taken possession of a Hamilton football facility in an asset transfer, marking a significant milestone for the ambitious club. The community asset transfer of the Queens Drive pavilion and pitches was approved by South Lanarkshire Council with unanimous support from elected members. The club plans to upgrade the existing facilities, creating a state-of-the-art sporting hub for the community.
Club chair Gerry McGhie expressed delight over completing the asset transfer process, stating that the ultimate vision is to develop a 3G all-weather pitch, a multi-use games area, and additional community meeting spaces. The phased development approach includes upgrades to the existing pitches and pavilion, the creation of new community spaces, and improvements such as drainage, floodlighting, fencing, and new playing pitches.
Nearly 500 local residents have voiced support for Eddlewood’s application and plans, highlighting the community’s enthusiasm for enhanced facilities. The club aims to promote active lifestyles, reduce isolation, and provide a space for youth development and social activities, with the belief that these improvements will have a lasting positive impact on the community.
As part of the asset transfer agreement, Eddlewood will manage and develop the site for the next 20 years under a peppercorn rent. The club has already begun drainage improvement works on the pitches, supported by a grant from the council’s renewable energy fund. The plan includes the construction of a community hub within five years, with a focus on long-term investments in the facility.
Local councillor Helen Toner commended Eddlewood for their plans to revitalize the pavilion into a thriving community space. The club’s commitment to enhancing local sporting and recreational facilities has garnered support and praise from the community, setting the stage for a transformative project that aims to benefit residents of all ages.
