The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has launched a new recruitment drive aimed at potential spies in China, Iran, and North Korea, following the success of a similar campaign targeting Russians. Instructions in Mandarin, Korean, and Farsi have been posted by the CIA to allow individuals in these countries to securely contact the agency.
Building on the achievements of similar recruitment efforts in Russia, CIA officials are reaching out to dissatisfied individuals amidst China’s increasing collaboration with Russia and Iran. The organisation has shared instructions across various social media platforms, including Telegram, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube, enabling people to reach out to the CIA through public or Dark Web sites.
Known as “hard targets,” countries like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran have stringent measures in place to prevent foreign intelligence penetration and access to their operations. These nations often block US social media platforms like Facebook but individuals can circumvent these restrictions using VPNs and other tools, although this may attract scrutiny from authorities.
The CIA has created viral videos containing instructions for potential informants on how to contact US intelligence officials safely. Tips provided include using the darknet, VPNs to bypass internet restrictions, using untraceable devices, private web browsers, and deleting internet history to maintain anonymity.
CIA Deputy Director David Cohen highlighted that many individuals in China are disenchanted with the government and are seeking ways to collaborate with the US to aid their country. China has objected to the CIA’s recruitment strategy, labelling it as an orchestrated disinformation campaign to undermine the bond between the Chinese people and the CCP.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu stated, “Any attempts to drive a wedge between the Chinese people and the CCP or to weaken their close bond will inevitably fail.” The CIA’s initiatives have sparked controversy and raised concerns among authorities in the target countries.
The CIA’s efforts to recruit spies in challenging regions demonstrate the agency’s determination to gather intelligence from countries with limited access. By utilising a mix of technology and strategic communication, the CIA is navigating complex geopolitical landscapes to meet its intelligence objectives.
