Interim England manager Lee Carsley has declared his intention to steer clear of a ‘copy and paste’ approach to squad selection, ensuring that players are chosen based solely on merit. The former footballer revealed his squad of 25 players for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland, following his temporary appointment after Gareth Southgate’s departure.
In a deliberate move to break away from any hint of favouritism, Carsley has omitted players such as Eberechi Eze, Harry Maguire, Tino Livramento, Jared Bowen, James Maddison, and Marcus Rashford from his recent squad selections. He emphasised that every player chosen must feel that their place on the team is well-earned.
