A man in Baltimore has admitted to strangling his cellmate in jail, who was deaf and facing minor charges. The 35-year-old, Gordon Staron, pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of his cellmate, Javarick Gantt in 2022. Staron was already incarcerated on murder charges at the time when he committed the crime.
Javarick Gantt, who was 34 years old and hearing-impaired, was awaiting his trial in jail for relatively minor criminal charges. He relied on sign language to communicate and had been held in detention for months due to delays in Baltimore’s court system. Gantt had been charged in connection with a domestic dispute from 2019, which did not result in serious injuries. Following missed court appearances and probation check-ins, a judge had ordered him to be held without bond.
It remains unclear why Gantt, who was vulnerable and facing lesser charges, was placed in the same cell as Staron, a man facing murder accusations. Staron had previously been accused of using an axe to kill a 63-year-old man at a city bus stop. A recent jury verdict found Staron guilty in that case, with his sentencing scheduled for December 19.
In a rare move, Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates declared that he would personally handle the prosecution of the case. Bates highlighted the importance of seeking justice for vulnerable individuals in the community, stressing that he would pursue a life sentence without parole for Staron. Bates made it clear that he aims to ensure that Staron never has the opportunity to harm others in the future.
