State Department Describes US Role in Assisting Escaped Yazidi Woman Flee Gaza
The State Department revealed on Thursday the involvement of US officials in helping repatriate a Yazidi woman who managed to free herself from captivity in Gaza after her captor, a Hamas militant, passed away. Matthew Miller, at a daily briefing, shared that although the US was not part of her escape, they provided assistance in transporting her out of Gaza and back to her family in Iraq. The woman’s identity was kept confidential. She was abducted by Isis militants at the age of 11 during the group’s incursion in Iraq, leading her into captivity and coerced marriage.
According to Miller, her captors sold her to a Hamas member in the Gaza Strip, where she was held against her will ever since. Following the death of her captor in Gaza, she seized the opportunity to break free, prompting the Iraqi government to seek US support upon learning of her escape. Miller stated, “The government of Iraq asked us to do whatever we could to get her out of Gaza and get her home.” Cooperation from various regional partners, including the Israeli government, facilitated her safe return to her family in Iraq.
Miller pointed out that this was a unique case of a Yazidi Iraqi kidnapped individual resurfacing in Gaza, hinting at the possibility of similar occurrences. The intricate sequence of events sheds light on the convoluted dynamics among militant groups in the region. Hamas and Hezbollah, amidst their conflicts with Israel, receive backing from Iran and affiliated forces. Isis openly opposes Iran, predominantly Shia-controlled. Approximately 2,600 Yazidi non-combatants, predominantly children at the time of capture, are still missing post the territorial defeats of Isis in Iraq and Syria.
The organisation retains active pockets across regions like Afghanistan. The US military estimates about 2,500 fighters at large in Iraq and Syria, alongside another 2,000 believed to be situated between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The ongoing struggles of the Yazidi community underscore the lasting repercussions of conflict and emphasise the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises.
