Thailand Slams Criticism Over Pygmy Hippo Moo Deng’s ‘Lifetime of Confinement’
Thailand has strongly refuted claims made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) regarding a baby pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng, who has garnered attention for her playful antics. Moo Deng, which means bouncy pork in Thai, was born in July at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi and has captured hearts with her online videos and photos showing her joyful interactions with the keeper.
Despite Peta’s assertions that Moo Deng faced a lifetime of confinement, the zoo officials defended their treatment of the popular hippo. Moo Deng’s charm has attracted visitors from across the globe, with many making special trips to witness her adorable behaviour. Businesses have seized the opportunity to capitalise on her fame, selling merchandise featuring her image.
Peta criticised the zoo for allegedly depriving Moo Deng of her natural freedom, emphasising that hippos belong in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature notes that pygmy hippos are endangered, with hunting and habitat destruction threatening their population. The zoo director, Narongwit Chodchoi, rebuffed these claims, highlighting the zoo’s efforts to ensure the welfare of all its animals, including Moo Deng.
In response to Peta’s allegations, the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TSPCA) denounced the use of outdated and inaccurate information. The TSPCA Secretary, Sathit Pratchaya-ariyakun, emphasised that Moo Deng receives proper care in line with international standards and confirmed that the zoo adheres to strict protocols to prevent overcrowding and ensure animal well-being.
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo has faced criticism in the past for its treatment of animals, such as its elephant swimming shows. Despite the backlash, the zoo defended its practices, underscoring the importance of animal welfare and conservation. While some social media users sided with Peta in criticising the zoo, others defended the establishment, citing its efforts to provide a safe and enriching environment for its residents.
