US Army testing roll out of gun-mounted robot dogs in Middle East

The US Army is currently conducting trials of robot dogs equipped with AI-powered guns at a military base in the Middle East, as tensions escalate in the region. Recently released photographs from the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) showcase one of these four-legged robots undergoing exercises at the Red Sand Dunes area near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, home to a joint military research facility. The unmanned quadrupedal vehicle is seen featuring what appears to be an AR-15/M16-pattern rifle on a rotating turret, reminiscent of a robot system previously tested by the US Army in New York.

Described by the US Army as a four-legged unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) armed with an AI-enabled rifle, the robot dog contributes to advancing unmanned capabilities. The trials at Red Sands included testing this autonomous system along with 15 other “counter-drone platforms” last month, as per Military.com. The US Department of Defense has been integrating robot dogs and other autonomous ground vehicles into its operations in recent years, with various companies developing similar systems for military applications.

Boston Dynamics, an American engineering company, was among the first to introduce robot dogs, debuting its initial prototype “BigDog” in 2005 in collaboration with Nasa and DARPA. The company’s commercial model, “Spot,” priced at approximately $75,000 each, was initially focused on industrial and warehouse tasks, showcasing capabilities in safety inspections at construction sites. Despite Boston Dynamics’ stance against weaponizing the technology, other companies have continued to produce autonomous systems for military use, raising concerns over the ethical implications and costs associated with such advancements.

The deployment of robot dogs by different entities, including law enforcement agencies like the NYPD and LAPD for surveillance purposes, has faced criticism. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) even planned to use robot dogs for border patrol operations along the US-Mexico border, drawing condemnation from various sectors. Similarly, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reportedly utilized remote-controlled dogs equipped with aerial drones during its operations in Gaza earlier this year, aiming to gather intelligence and enhance soldier performance in the field.

As the situation in the Middle East escalates, particularly with recent missile launches from Iran towards Israel, interest in testing robot systems has intensified. Concerns surrounding the use of robotic dogs for military functions have prompted discussions on ethical considerations and adherence to regulations. In response to criticisms, the Pentagon issued a directive last year stating that AI capabilities in weapons systems must align with the Department of Defense AI Ethical Principles and be employed with caution and adherence to international laws and treaties.

Despite attempts to regulate the development and use of such technologies, rights groups have deemed the directive as insufficient in addressing the potential risks associated with militarized robot dogs. The ongoing evolution and deployment of autonomous systems in conflict zones raise significant questions about the intersection of technology, warfare, and ethics.
