Wisconsin election clerks have raised concerns over 30 instances of suspected fraud and voting irregularities in the past year, prompting them to refer these cases to prosecutors. The disclosure comes after a detailed report reflecting the heightened vigilance within the state’s electoral processes to uphold transparency and integrity.
The state’s election administrators, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties, have highlighted the robust safeguards in place to prevent widespread voter fraud across the nation. With a decentralised election system comprising thousands of independent voting jurisdictions, such as Wisconsin’s 1,800 local clerks, the likelihood of large-scale electoral manipulation is deemed low. Nonetheless, sporadic cases of malpractice demand swift investigation and action.
Under Wisconsin law, election clerks are mandated to report instances of suspected fraud or voting irregularities to the Wisconsin Election Commission, which in turn compiles these cases into an annual report for legislative review. The recently presented report, set for approval by the commission, outlines the referrals made between July 1, 2023, and September 12 of this year.
Among the reported cases, 18 instances involved individuals voting more than once, with Milwaukee County citing seven such incidents during the 2024 spring election and eight during the 2023 spring election. Additional instances of double voting were reported in Douglas and Kenosha counties, alongside discrepancies in write-in candidate totals in the 2024 spring election in Douglas County.
The report refrains from disclosing personal information or detailing case dispositions, maintaining a focus on highlighting the need for vigilance and prompt action in response to electoral malpractice. Notably, the 2023 report from the commission documented 44 cases of suspected fraud reported to district attorneys in the preceding year, underscoring the ongoing effort to safeguard the integrity of Wisconsin’s electoral system.
