Anne Williams, a resident of Auchencairn, recently shared her inspiring story in Galloway People. A dedicated group of volunteers, including Anne, played a crucial role in saving the village’s only shop from closure. Amid concerns that the closure would further impact the small coastal community of fewer than 400 residents, Anne and her team took action. Through their hard work and commitment, the shop, cafe, and nursery are now under community ownership and have been successfully refurbished following a substantial fundraising effort.
Anne, a vivacious 74-year-old, has a remarkable life journey that began in Glasgow. After graduating from Glasgow University with a degree in psychology, she moved with her husband to various locations, including York and Liverpool. It was during her time working in social services in Liverpool and Salford that Anne found her true calling. Her dedication and passion led her to significant roles in social services, including being appointed as the national director for learning disabilities in England.
In 2018, Anne and her husband retired to Auchencairn, where they had purchased a cottage years before. Tragically, Anne lost her husband shortly after their move. Despite the personal loss, Anne immersed herself in the Auchencairn community. She became involved in the Auchencairn Initiative, eventually becoming its convenor after the previous leader fell ill.
The Auchencairn Initiative faced challenges with the failing shop, but through innovative thinking and community support, they found solutions. Transitioning the shop to community ownership was a seamless process, and it has now become a thriving hub with volunteers from all walks of life supporting the operations. The community shop and cafe have been transformed, offering fresh food, baking, and takeaway services, and have become integral to the village’s social fabric.
Through community efforts and volunteer support, initiatives like the community allotments and garden have flourished, adding to the village’s charm. Anne emphasises that the success of such endeavours is a testament to the dedication of staff, volunteers, and community backing. The Auchencairn Initiative’s assets, which include the shop, nursery, gardens, and allotments, have all been managed and sustained through the hard work of volunteers applying for grants and supporting each other.
Anne’s story is not only a personal journey of resilience and community spirit but also a testament to the power of collective action in preserving and revitalising a small village like Auchencairn. Her selfless dedication to community service serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing how positive change can be achieved through collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.
