A British man has tragically drowned at a famous tourist spot in Spain, adding to a series of fatal incidents that have occurred on the town’s beaches this year. The 72-year-old man was found unconscious in the water around 3.30pm on Thursday at a beach in Guardamar del Segura in Costa Blanca. Despite efforts by emergency services to revive him, they were unsuccessful.
According to sources cited by the Daily Mail, it is believed that the man may have experienced a health issue before drowning in the sea. The beaches in Guardamar del Segura are known for their strong currents, and warning signs in Spanish and English are displayed by the local council to caution beachgoers about the perilous conditions.
Guardamar del Segura, situated in the province of Alicante, is a popular destination for tourists in Spain due to its 11km of beautiful sandy beaches, historical sites, and a variety of hotels and resorts that attract visitors. This recent incident marks the seventh death to occur on the same beachfront this year.
In a previous incident in June, another British tourist lost his life while trying to rescue two children who were struggling in the water at La Roqueta beach in Guardamar del Segura. Tragically, the sea conditions worsened, leading to the death of the British man and a 46-year-old man from Poland who also tried to help.
This string of unfortunate events continued with a 68-year-old Israeli national drowning at the same beach a day after the previous incident. The mayor of Guardamar del Segura, Jose Luis Saez, warned about the dangerous sea conditions, advising against swimming due to the strong currents.
In July, a married couple in their eighties from Madrid met with a similar fate while on holiday in Guardamar del Segura. The husband suffered a heart attack while swimming, prompting his wife to attempt a rescue, resulting in both of them suffering cardiorespiratory arrest and ultimately passing away.
The Independent reached out to the Spanish Civil Guard for further comments on these incidents. It is crucial for beachgoers to exercise caution and heed warning signs when visiting coastal areas with known hazardous conditions.
