College sports ‘fraternity’ jumping in to help athletes from schools impacted by Hurricane Helene

College sports ‘fraternity’ come together to aid athletes affected by Hurricane Helene

In the wake of Hurricane Helene leaving a trail of destruction with more than 200 people dead and many missing, college sports teams have rallied together to assist those impacted by the disaster. The UNC Asheville soccer and volleyball teams, among others, have found refuge at sister schools such as UNC Charlotte, showcasing a heartwarming example of colleges lending a helping hand in times of need.

UNC Asheville soccer player Xander Naguib and his teammates faced evacuation from their off-campus apartment in Asheville as the hurricane wreaked havoc on their surroundings. Blocked off from communication and basic necessities, Naguib sought shelter in a hotel before relocating to UNC Charlotte, where they have been offered accommodation, meals, and access to sports facilities to continue their training.

UNC Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill extended a helping hand to UNC Asheville, along with other schools stepping up to support those affected. Schools like High Point University, Gardner-Webb University, and Wofford College have also opened their doors to accommodate Asheville’s various sports teams, ensuring they have a safe space to regroup and carry on with their athletic pursuits.

The outpouring of support from the college sports community has been heartening, with AD Janet Cone acknowledging the unity and care demonstrated during this challenging time. Despite the disruptions to fall sports schedules and campus facilities, institutions like Tusculum have found innovative solutions to continue their teams’ activities by collaborating with rival schools and tapping into community resources.

While the focus remains on rebuilding lives and communities devastated by the hurricane, the resilience and camaraderie shown by college sports teams offer a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Cone emphasised the importance of helping student-athletes find stability and normalcy, showcasing the true spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity in the face of adversity.

As the affected schools navigate the challenges brought about by Hurricane Helene, the unwavering support and collaboration within the college sports ‘fraternity’ serve as a beacon of light in dark times. The collective efforts to ensure athletes have a safe haven to pursue their passions highlight the power of unity and empathy in overcoming adversity.
