A family in South Carolina is planning to honour the memory of a hurricane victim by repurposing logs from the fallen tree that tragically took his life. Charles Dean, who cherished the lush surroundings of his neighbourhood, met his untimely death when Hurricane Helene caused a red oak tree to topple onto his apartment in Greenville.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, instead of disposing of the tree, Charles’s relatives intend to use the wood to create a bench, table, or other furnishings to be donated to drug recovery centres where Charles had made a positive impact on many lives. His brother, Matthew Dean, expressed that Charles had helped numerous individuals struggling with addiction and always held onto hope.
The fatal incident occurred during Hurricane Helene, which ravaged the Southeastern region of the United States, claiming the lives of over 200 people. The storm’s fierce winds uprooted trees and structures, resulting in catastrophic consequences. In South Carolina alone, devastating stories emerged including that of a couple who perished in their home and two firefighters who lost their lives when a tree fell on their truck.
