A helicopter pilot in North Carolina faced the threat of arrest after conducting voluntary rescues of people stranded in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Jordan Seidhom took action on Saturday upon learning about a family in Banner Elk running out of supplies through a Facebook post. Banner Elk was severely impacted by the hurricane, prompting Seidhom, a Class 1 certified law enforcement officer and experienced pilot with nearly 1,400 flight hours, to step in. Alongside his son, he is also a member of the Sandhills Volunteer Fire Department in Pageland, South Carolina.
After gaining permission from local airports to navigate the affected airspace towards Lake Lure, an area heavily affected by Helene, the duo set out to locate and rescue individuals in need. Their efforts resulted in the successful rescue of six people. The following day, the Seidhoms received numerous social media requests from others with loved ones stranded in the area.
During one rescue mission, Seidhom airlifted a woman from a dangerous situation on a deteriorating driveway near Lake Lure. Despite concerns about the helicopter’s weight capacity, he ensured her safety before making contact with first responders in the vicinity. However, upon arriving at the location, Seidhom was met by a fire chief who abruptly halted the operation and threatened him with arrest, citing his interference with official rescue efforts.
Seidhom explained his background in law enforcement, firefighting, and piloting to the officials, yet was ordered to cease his operations and head to Rutherford County Airport to wait for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials. Despite his insistence on returning to assist his son and complete the rescue mission, he was forbidden to do so. Meanwhile, the individuals awaiting rescue were eventually assisted by emergency medical technicians from Michigan.
Seidhom emphasized that the ultimatum issued by the fire official jeopardized lives and expressed regret for complying with the order. The incident sparked controversy on social media, with residents calling for the dismissal of the fire chief and demanding aid for stranded individuals. The Town of Lake Lure has been urged for commentary regarding the situation.
As the community seeks clarification and accountability, Seidhom’s actions in defying obstacles to assist those in need have garnered widespread attention and praise. His dedication to serving the community during a crisis exemplifies the selfless acts of bravery amid challenging circumstances.
