I walked 10,000 steps with a weighted backpack every day for a week – here are five reasons I’m not stopping

I embarked on a challenge to walk 10,000 steps a day with a weighted backpack for a week, and the results were so impressive that I have five reasons why I won’t be stopping anytime soon. Rucking, or walking with a weighted backpack, has gained popularity for its simplicity and effectiveness in boosting fitness levels. By adding weight to your walks, you can intensify your workout and engage various muscle groups like your heart, legs, and core simultaneously.

The accessibility of rucking is one of its key advantages. Unlike some exercise routines that require specialized equipment, rucking can be started with just a regular backpack and items you have at home. Nichele Cihlar from GoRuck suggests beginning with lighter weights and gradually increasing the load as you build strength. The versatility of rucking also makes it convenient to incorporate into everyday activities, such as dog walking or running errands, allowing you to easily reach your step goals.

One of the major benefits of rucking is its ability to help build strength. Wearing a weighted backpack while walking engages muscles in the lower body, core, and upper back, leading to improvements in muscle mass and bone density over time. Additionally, rucking provides a cardio workout by increasing oxygen consumption and heart rate, contributing to better cardiovascular fitness. Choosing the right weight is crucial to reaping the full benefits of rucking, with variations in load intensity catering to individual fitness levels.

Although my rucking challenge has concluded, I continue to use my weighted backpack for short workouts and find it to be a convenient way to elevate my walks into effective exercise sessions. The mental and physical benefits of rucking, such as improved mood and overall fitness, have made it a sustainable fitness routine for me. As someone who enjoys the challenge and practicality of rucking, I believe it is a trend that will endure in the world of fitness.

From enhancing strength and cardiovascular fitness to providing a convenient and accessible workout option, rucking has proven to be an effective and enjoyable exercise routine that has earned its place in my fitness regimen.
