Israel has launched fresh strikes on Beirut, targeting Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters, as part of its assault on the militant group’s leadership. The air attack drove over 1.2 million Lebanese residents from their homes and aimed at the potential successor to the recently assassinated Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The fate of Hashem Safieddine, the reported target, remains unclear as both Israel and Hezbollah have not commented on the matter.
Israeli Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani stated that the military is still assessing the damage caused by the airstrikes in southern Beirut, claiming to have eliminated approximately 250 Hezbollah operatives, including key commanders. Earlier reports indicated that the head of Hezbollah’s communication networks, Mohammad Rashid Sakafi, was killed in the strikes. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed that Tehran and its proxies, including Hezbollah and Hamas, will not be intimidated by Israel.
In a public appearance in Tehran, Khamenei declared Iran’s unwavering support for its allies and criticised Israel’s actions. US President Joe Biden hinted at potential Israeli strikes on oil facilities in response to Iran’s missile attacks, causing a surge in global oil prices. Hezbollah made no official statement on the reported deaths of Sakafi or Safieddine.
As tensions escalate, Iran’s allies in the region, dubbed the “Axis of Resistance,” have carried out attacks in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Khamenei emphasised the need for solidarity among these groups and hinted at Afghanistan joining the defence efforts. The conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides, with Israeli soldiers killed in combat and Lebanon facing a dire humanitarian crisis.
