JD Vance has commended Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican Congresswoman, shortly after she implied that Hurricane Helene may have been artificially created. Greene, known for endorsing conspiracy theories, including beliefs in “Jewish space lasers” and associations with QAnon, suggested that an unknown entity has the ability to manipulate the weather and directed Hurricane Helene towards Republican voters in Georgia and North Carolina.
Prior to speculating on weather control capabilities, Greene shared an electoral map juxtaposed with the areas most affected by Hurricane Helene. The insinuation from the map was that Democrats could have orchestrated the hurricane to harm Republican voters who were impacted by the storm. Despite the seriousness of the situation as those affected by Hurricane Helene continue to recover, Greene’s claims garnered attention.
During a campaign rally in Greene’s district, Senator JD Vance expressed his admiration for Greene, referring to her as a “great, strong woman leader” and underscoring her endorsement of him during his past political endeavours. Vance described Greene as a “loyal person” and a “hell of a Congresswoman,” praising her publicly despite the controversial statements she had made.
Democrats swiftly criticised Vance for his support of Greene, with DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd denouncing Greene as a “wildly out-of-touch conspiracy theorist” and an “election-denying extremist.” Floyd highlighted the inappropriateness of praising Greene amidst her propagation of fresh conspiracy theories while Georgia remains in the process of recovering from Hurricane Helene, insinuating that Vance’s association with Greene could be detrimental to his political prospects moving forward.
