A tragic incident on the Y Felinheli bypass near Bangor resulted in the death of a mother and serious injuries to her young son. Emma Morris, aged 28, lost her life almost instantly in a collision caused by Jacqueline Mwila’s dangerous manoeuvre on April 3, 2023. Mwila, driving an Audi A3, crossed a double white line to overtake, leading to a fatal crash with Emma’s Peugeot 208 that flipped over. Emma’s son Jack Williams, then four years old, sustained severe injuries, while her partner James Walsh was also hurt in the accident.
During the trial at Caernarfon Crown Court, it was revealed that Emma’s last moments were filled with tragedy as the collision occurred. Jack suffered brain bleeds, multiple fractures, and reduced consciousness, requiring urgent medical care. James, who also sustained injuries, recounted the harrowing experience of the crash and its aftermath. Emma’s family expressed profound grief and loss in emotional statements read out in court, highlighting the devastating impact of her untimely death.
In a solemn sentencing, Judge Timothy Petts extended sympathy to Emma’s family for their unimaginable loss and held Jacqueline Mwila accountable for causing the fatal crash through dangerous driving. Mwila received a sentence of seven years and four months for causing Emma’s death and additional concurrent sentences for causing serious injury. Despite Mwila’s remorse and acknowledgement of her reckless actions, the profound consequences of her driving decisions were irreversible.
The investigating officer, PC Gareth Rogers, emphasised the lasting impact of the tragedy on Emma’s loved ones and urged drivers to remain vigilant on the roads to prevent such devastating incidents. Emma’s family expressed disappointment in the sentence handed down, feeling that it did not truly reflect the magnitude of their loss and the impact of Mwila’s actions. Their lives were forever altered by the reckless and careless driving that led to Emma’s tragic death, leaving a void that can never be filled.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, the importance of road safety and responsible driving is underscored. Emma’s memory serves as a poignant reminder of the fragile nature of life and the lasting impact of one moment of carelessness on multiple families. The tragic loss of a young life and the enduring pain experienced by those left behind serve as a stark call to prioritise safety and responsibility while behind the wheel.
