Excitement is brewing as researchers at the University of Oxford are working on developing the world’s first vaccine for ovarian cancer, named OvarianVax. The goal is to administer this jab preventatively to women through the NHS with the ambitious aim of eradicating the disease altogether. Professor Ahmed Ahmed, leading a team at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, is conducting the study to pinpoint cellular targets for the vaccine.
The vaccine aims to teach the immune system to recognise tumour-associated antigens on the surface of potentially cancerous cells. Dr David Crosby from Cancer Research UK explains that once primed by the vaccine, white blood cells can effectively seek out and destroy these cells before they progress into tumours. Through the study, scientists are identifying key proteins on early-stage ovarian cancer cells and assessing how well the vaccine triggers immune cells to eliminate ovarian cancer models known as organoids.
Despite the promising developments, it will take several years for the vaccine to undergo rigorous clinical trials before it can be made widely available. Initial testing involves assessing various components of the vaccine using samples from ovarian cancer patients. The vaccine’s eligibility criteria and target population will be determined through these trials, likely initially focusing on women at a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Various risk factors for ovarian cancer include age, with individuals over 50 being at a heightened risk, and genetic factors such as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variants. Inherited genetic variants play a role in around 20% of ovarian cancer cases. Additional factors such as endometriosis, smoking, and diabetes have also been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer is notorious for its subtle symptoms in the early stages, which can include abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, nausea, and changes in bowel habits. Timely detection is crucial, and individuals experiencing persistent symptoms should seek prompt medical attention. Treatment for ovarian cancer typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted drugs tailored to the patient’s specific circumstances and preferences.
