Pollster Attributes Ted Cruz’s Tough Re-Election Race in Texas to Cancun Scandal
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz finds himself embroiled in a challenging re-election campaign, with a top pollster attributing the difficulty to lingering memories of his infamous Cancun scandal. Cruz, a former adversary of Donald Trump turned staunch supporter and a regular face on cable news, faced intense backlash in February 2021 for jetting off to a luxury Cancun resort while Texas was grappling with a deadly winter storm that claimed the lives of 246 Texans and left millions without essential services like power and water.
Following widespread criticism, Cruz hurriedly returned home and conducted apologetic interviews at the airport, attempting to justify his actions as being a responsible parent to his daughters. The controversy deepened when a reporter photographed the Cruz family’s dog, Snowflake, peering sadly through the front door of their Houston residence, seemingly abandoned in the cold. The incident led Cruz to be dubbed “Cancun Cruz,” a label that has stuck with him as he continues to face repercussions from the ill-fated trip.
Jessica Taylor, Senior Editor of The Cook Political Report, highlighted the potential impact of the Cancun scandal on Cruz’s re-election prospects in his current battle against Democratic challenger Colin Allred. Taylor noted the closeness of Cruz’s previous win over Beto O’Rourke in the 2018 midterms and stated that Texas is increasingly becoming a target for the Democrats to secure a victory. Cruz’s polarizing image and vulnerabilities on issues such as abortion and his legislative track record could make him susceptible to Allred’s campaign.

Despite Cruz currently maintaining a slim lead of two to three points in the polls, Democrats view the race as a critical opportunity and have pledged additional support through the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to bolster Allred’s campaign.
As the election date approaches, the race between Cruz and Allred is intensifying, with Republicans aligning their efforts to paint Allred as closely associated with prominent Democrats like Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, particularly on immigration issues. However, the tightening poll numbers and increased spending in the Texas Senate race indicate a potentially challenging road ahead for Cruz as he navigates the aftermath of the Cancun scandal and strives to secure another term in office.
