RZA’s Latest Musical Venture Explores Classical Territory in ‘A Ballet Through Mud’
Renowned musician RZA, a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, has embarked on a new artistic endeavour with the release of his first classical album titled “A Ballet Through Mud.” Inspired by a hoarding habit during the pandemic, the 55-year-old artist delved into a bag of old spiral notebooks from his library and unearthed a blue Mead notebook filled with rhymes, phone numbers, and teenage musings from his upbringing in Staten Island.
Reflecting on his early days in the music industry, RZA discovered a collection of storytelling raps that he had deemed too immature for his first musical projects. Drawing on his years of experience studying music theory and composing film scores, he began crafting melodies on the keyboard that brought to life one of his teenage rhyme-stories about six friends, titled “Joe Is A Nerd.”
As the musical compositions evolved, RZA’s wife suggested that no vocals were necessary, prompting him to explore a fusion of classical music and storytelling. This led him to collaborate with the Colorado Symphony for two performances in February 2023, accompanied by dancers to visually interpret his imaginative narrative.
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, RZA discussed the nostalgic roots of his latest project, highlighting the intersection between classical music and hip-hop. He shared his vision for the future of “A Ballet Through Mud,” expressing a desire for the ballet to reach young audiences in high schools and colleges, inspiring them to engage with the music and story.
Reflecting on the growing trend of collaborations between hip-hop artists and orchestras, RZA noted the cultural significance of blending different musical genres. Drawing on his own experiences with the Wu-Tang Clan and orchestral performances, he encouraged aspiring musicians to explore classical instruments early in their careers, offering them a limitless creative horizon.
