Relatives say a whole family was killed in Israel’s deadliest West Bank strike since Oct. 7

A tragic incident unfolded in the West Bank as relatives reported that an entire family was killed in what has been described as Israel’s deadliest strike in the region since October 7th. The devastating airstrike targeted a cafe in the Tulkarem refugee camp, allegedly aimed at Palestinian militants, but resulted in the loss of a family of four, including two young children, as informed by relatives to The Associated Press on Friday.

The strike, which took place late Thursday, caused severe damage to a three-story building, leading to a fire outbreak and the destruction of a popular cafe. The aftermath of the strike saw at least 18 Palestinians losing their lives, according to the Health Ministry of the territory. This incident marks the deadliest strike in the West Bank since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas almost a year ago.

On the following day, paramedics sifted through the rubble within the cafe, trying to retrieve human remains amidst the chaos. The destruction wrought by the strike was palpable, with young boys and men navigating through the ruins, searching for anything salvageable. Among the casualties were the Abu Zahra family, consisting of Muhammad, a bakery worker, his wife Saja, and their two children, Sham aged 8, and Karam aged 6 as confirmed by Muhammad’s brother, Mustafa Abu Zahra.

The Israeli military contended that the strike targeted several militants, including the leader of Hamas in the camp, accusing him of orchestrating and participating in various attacks against Israeli civilians. Tulkarem, recognized as a hub of Palestinian militancy, has been a frequent target for Israeli military operations. Hamas, although not immediately claiming any of the deceased as their fighters, condemned the strike and urged Palestinians in Tulkarem to stand up against such actions.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a series of large-scale raids in the West Bank since the initiation of the war in Gaza. The Israeli forces have escalated airstrikes in the region to prevent attacks on their citizens, resulting in a significant number of casualties among Palestinians. The toll from such actions has been devastating, with at least 722 Palestinians losing their lives in the West Bank since October 7th, as reported by Palestinian health officials.

The aftermath of the strike in Tulkarem has left a community reeling from the loss of loved ones and the destruction of livelihoods. The devastation is palpable, with survivors struggling to make sense of the tragedy and the Israeli military facing scrutiny over civilian casualties. The strike serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and the toll it exacts on innocent lives in the region. The situation remains tense as both sides grapple with the repercussions of the deadly strike.

As the community mourns the loss of lives, questions loom over the accountability and consequences of such actions in the midst of an already volatile situation in the West Bank. Families have been shattered, livelihoods destroyed, and the cycle of violence continues unabated, underscoring the urgent need for a lasting resolution to the conflict that has claimed countless lives over the years.
