Tech mogul Mike Lynch tragically lost his life in a maritime accident when his luxurious superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily. The inquest revealed that Lynch drowned in the incident, while the deaths of his daughter Hannah Lynch and the Bloomer couple, Jonathan and Judith, are still under investigation.
The Suffolk Coroners Court heard that the yacht, named Bayesian, sank rapidly in the early hours of 19 August, with the exact cause yet to be determined. Detective Superintendent Mike Brown of Suffolk Police disclosed that out of the total occupants on board, 15 were rescued, but seven were reported missing. The search and rescue efforts commenced immediately but tragically came too late for those who lost their lives.
The yacht was located close to the port town of Porticello and was flying a British flag when it went down during a sudden storm. The time of death for all four victims was recorded as 5 am, with the bodies of the Bloomers found on 21 August, Dr. Lynch on the following day, and Hannah Lynch brought ashore on 23 August.
Inquests for the four individuals were opened and adjourned in Ipswich until 15 April next year. The provisional cause of Dr. Lynch’s death was determined to be drowning, while investigations are ongoing to ascertain the causes of death for the other victims. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is conducting an inquiry into the yacht’s sinking, and Italian authorities have launched their own criminal investigations.
The tragic incident also claimed the lives of other passengers, including US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, along with the boat’s chef, Recaldo Thomas. The circumstances of the sinking were further explored in a recent ITV documentary, shedding light on the final moments of the yacht before it went underwater.
Mike Lynch, known for founding software giant Autonomy, was recently cleared of fraud allegations related to the firm’s sale to Hewlett-Packard. The fatal boat trip was intended to commemorate his acquittal following the case in the US.
