XL Bully owners in Scotland have been seeking compensation of £200 from the Scottish Government as they face the need to euthanise their dogs following a recent law change. The government introduced restrictions on XL Bully dogs due to a series of attacks, mandating owners to muzzle the dogs and keep them on a lead in public spaces. Additionally, the breed is no longer allowed to be sold or exchanged.
This new regulation has led to a compensation scheme being established for owners who opt to have their XL Bully dogs euthanised. So far, 19 individuals have received £200 each through this scheme. The decision to implement these restrictions came after an increase in the number of XL Bullies entering Scotland following the enforcement of controls on the breed in England last year.
Initially, former First Minister Humza Yousaf had indicated that similar regulations were unnecessary in Scotland. However, SNP ministers later decided to largely mirror the restrictions in place in England. While the law change has been supported by some, it has faced opposition from animal welfare organisations like the Scottish SPCA.
The Scottish SPCA expressed concerns that the new regulations could result in the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy dogs simply based on their appearance, rather than their behaviour. The organisation highlighted the importance of comprehensive measures that enhance public safety while also safeguarding animal welfare, emphasising that singling out specific breeds may not be the most effective solution.
Despite differing opinions on the matter, the implementation of these regulations underscores the ongoing efforts to address dog control-related issues and protect the public. The debate surrounding breed-specific legislation continues to raise questions about the most appropriate and effective ways to ensure public safety while promoting responsible dog ownership.
