Italian tennis legend and fashion icon, Lea Pericoli, has sadly passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by the Italian Tennis Federation. The 27-time national champion, hailing from Milan, not only left a mark in the world of tennis but also in the world of fashion, later transitioning to become a well-loved television presenter and journalist.
Pericoli, who dominated as Italy’s top player from 1959 to 1976, was renowned for her innovative on-court style choices during the conservative 1950s and 60s. She boldly sported culottes, short dresses, and skirts embellished with feathers, frills, and at times even mink, revolutionising the fashion scene within tennis. Fans flocked to her matches not just for her playing prowess but also to catch a glimpse of her unique and daring outfits, some of which were designed by the famous British player-turned-fashion designer, Teddy Tinling.
Throughout her career, Pericoli clinched an impressive total of 27 titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles national championships. Her Grand Slam achievements included reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon three times and the Round of 16 at the French Open four times.
