Minsters announce cancer research investments

Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has revealed significant investments in cancer research projects aimed at revolutionising early detection and treatment. Among the projects set to benefit from a total investment of £148 million are a blood test that can detect 12 different cancers at an early stage, research into AI diagnoses, and personalised immunotherapy treatments.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has confirmed that research hubs will be established at universities throughout the UK, with funding coming from both the Government and private sector sources. These investments are intended to foster collaboration between universities, the healthcare system, and pharmaceutical companies to develop innovative treatments and enhance the UK’s economic growth.

One of the key projects highlighted by Mr. Streeting is a new blood test being developed by Dr. Andrew Shapanis and Professor Paul Skipp. This test aims to detect 12 common and deadly cancers early on, using just a few drops of blood. The test could potentially eliminate the need for lengthy waits for cancer tests and scans, offering a more efficient and effective diagnostic tool.

The research hubs will be established at prestigious institutions such as University College London, the University of Liverpool, the University of Bristol, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Edinburgh. Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, emphasised that supporting cutting-edge technologies not only promises improved health outcomes but also has the potential to stimulate economic growth by attracting investment into the life sciences sector.

Mr. Streeting, a cancer survivor himself, stressed the importance of early diagnosis and advanced treatments in saving lives and strengthening the UK’s position as a leader in life sciences and medical technology. The focus on combining the expertise of the NHS with the innovative capacity of the scientific community is seen as a strategic move to develop groundbreaking treatments and drive economic prosperity in the country.

The DSIT has outlined a range of potential advancements that could arise from these investments, including more affordable scanners for early cancer detection and the training of AI models to diagnose cancer by analysing data shared across the NHS. The announcement precedes the upcoming International Investment Summit, where the life sciences sector will be a focal point for global investors recognising its value in promoting growth and delivering life-saving solutions.
