Russian prosecutors have reportedly requested a seven-year prison term for a US man accused of participating in combat for Ukraine against Russia. The trial of the American citizen, identified as 72-year-old Stephen Hubbard, has been ongoing in Russia, with prosecutors recommending the lengthy sentence for his alleged involvement as a mercenary in Ukraine. It is noted that Hubbard has confessed to the charges brought against him.
According to Russian news agencies, prosecutors have taken into consideration Hubbard’s age and his admission of guilt in their sentencing request. They have proposed that he serve the seven-year term in a maximum-security penal colony. In Russia, engaging in mercenary activities is considered a criminal offence that carries a sentence of 7 to 15 years in prison.
The accusations against Hubbard stem from his purported contract with the Ukrainian military following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022. It is alleged that Hubbard agreed to work as a mercenary for the Ukrainian military in exchange for payment. He reportedly underwent military training, was provided with a personal firearm, and fought alongside Ukrainian forces until his capture by Russian military personnel in April 2022.
The US Embassy in Moscow has acknowledged reports of Hubbard’s arrest, stating awareness of the situation but refraining from further comments due to privacy restrictions. Russian courts are known for convicting a high percentage of defendants, with prosecutors having the ability to challenge sentences they perceive as too lenient.
Incidents of Americans being detained in Russia have increased in recent years, leading to concerns that such actions could be part of a strategy to use them as bargaining tools in negotiations for the return of Russian nationals convicted of crimes in the US and Europe. In August, the US and Russia conducted a significant prisoner exchange involving 24 individuals, although several Americans remain in incarceration in Russia post the exchange.
