Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks Attempts Assassination on Donald Trump at Pennsylvania Rally
The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the gunman who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. The 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle while the former president was speaking on stage in the rural town of Butler on July 13.
During the rally, multiple shots were fired towards the stage, prompting Trump to be quickly surrounded and rushed to safety by his Secret Service detail. Trump confirmed that he was struck by one of the bullets in the right ear. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed Crooks at the scene, with volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore also losing his life while trying to protect his family.
The FBI is currently investigating the shooting as a potential act of domestic terrorism. Crooks’ motive remains elusive, as the ideological stance of the gunman, who had no identification on him during the attack, is still unknown.
Crooks, a former student of Bethel Park High School, had reportedly experienced bullying and isolation, according to classmates. While some described him as intelligent with slightly right-leaning political views, others mentioned that he rarely discussed politics and enjoyed playing video games.
The shooter fired from an elevated roof of a shed outside the security perimeter, approximately 500 feet away from where Trump was speaking. The FBI believes Crooks acted alone and had bomb-making materials in his car. Investigations have not uncovered any threatening comments on social media that could shed light on his motives.
Family members expressed shock at Crooks’ involvement in the attempted assassination, with his father stating that he was unaware of what motivated his son’s actions. Crooks’ uncle, Mark Crooks, shared that he had minimal contact with his nephew in recent years and was taken aback by the news.
In the aftermath of the incident, security measures have been heightened for future events involving Trump to prevent similar occurrences. Despite surviving two assassination attempts, Trump plans to return to the Butler venue on October 5 to continue his rally, with enhanced security protocols in place.
