Airline apologises after ‘sexually explicit’ film played to every passenger – with no way to turn it off

Passengers on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Tokyo had an unexpected and uncomfortable experience when an R-rated film was played on every screen due to technical issues with the in-flight entertainment system. The incident occurred when individual movie selection was not available, prompting Qantas staff to choose a film based on passengers’ preferences.

Despite their efforts to address the issue, the film selected turned out to be the racy drama “Daddio,” which contains explicit sexual content and graphic nudity, including exposed genitals. Passengers were unable to pause, dim, or turn off the movie, leading to a distressing situation for those on board, especially families with children.

One passenger took to Reddit to express their discomfort, stating that the film was highly inappropriate and featured scenes that were not suitable for all audiences. It reportedly took nearly an hour before Qantas staff changed the film to a more family-friendly option, acknowledging the discomfort caused to passengers.

A spokesperson for Qantas apologised for the incident, stating that they are reviewing how the movie was selected and recognising that it was not suitable for a general audience. The airline assured customers that they have protocols in place to switch to family-friendly content in situations where individual movie selection is not available.

The event serves as a reminder of the challenges airlines face with in-flight entertainment systems and the importance of ensuring that content is appropriate for all passengers. Qantas has pledged to investigate the incident further to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Passengers and aviation authorities are hopeful that lessons will be learned from this incident to prevent any further discomfort or distress during flights. Airlines play a crucial role in providing a safe and comfortable travel experience for passengers, and incidents like this highlight the need for careful consideration when selecting in-flight entertainment options.
