Elon Musk, the CEO of X and Tesla, appeared at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, where he made a boldly false claim that Democrats were planning to eliminate elections in the US. Trump, returning to the location where he survived an assassination attempt in July, introduced Musk as the individual who “saved free speech” and as a “rocket builder,” highlighting the role of his company Space X in facilitating American astronauts’ return to space.
The world’s richest man joined the stage wearing a black “Make America Great Again” hat, referring to himself as “dark MAGA,” a term associated with fringe far-right ideology. He took aim at President Joe Biden, suggesting Biden lacked physical capability compared to Trump, who Musk praised for his resilience following the assassination attempt. Musk further asserted that Democrats were aiming to revoke Americans’ rights to free speech, bear arms, and vote, despite providing no evidence to support these claims.
In his address to the crowd, Musk emphasised the significance of the upcoming election, proclaiming it as crucial for preserving the Constitution and democracy in America. He urged Americans to register to vote immediately and baselessly warned that failure to do so could result in the last election ever taking place. Notably, Musk lacks a background in politics, and his statements at the rally drew criticism for their lack of factual basis.
Following his appearance, Trump disclosed that he was unaware of Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, but had requested Musk’s assistance in deploying it to aid those affected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. Despite Musk’s unexpected political stance, critics had long suspected his alignment with right-wing ideologies due to previous remarks regarding social issues and his endorsement of Trump during the election cycle.
Musk’s show of support for Trump included offering financial contributions to Trump’s campaign and engaging in right-leaning political circles. Reports suggest Musk has funnelled significant amounts to groups associated with key Republican figures. Their mutual admiration was evident, with Trump expressing plans to involve Musk in a task force aimed at cutting government spending, an initiative Musk endorsed through his platform.
Moreover, Musk’s ownership of X, formerly Twitter, provided Trump and his allies with a substantial platform, enabling the dissemination of their views while circumventing attempts to curb misinformation.
