Four popular breakfast foods have been linked to an increased cancer risk, according to a recent study. People who consume more ultra-processed foods (UPFs) were found to have a higher likelihood of developing certain cancers. The British Heart Foundation identifies sausages, breakfast cereals, mass-produced bread, and fruit-flavoured yoghurts as UPFs commonly eaten for breakfast. Despite being convenient and affordable options, UPFs have been associated with various negative health outcomes, including obesity, which itself raises the risk of developing cancer.
Several studies have highlighted the connection between UPF consumption and cancer. A recent British study conducted by the University of Bristol and the International Agency for Research on Cancer analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, involving 450,111 adults over approximately 14 years. The research revealed that a 10% increase in UPF intake was linked to a 23% higher risk of head and neck cancer and a 24% higher risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Fernanda Morales-Bernstein, lead author of the study, noted that UPFs are often linked to excess weight due to their taste, convenience, and affordability, leading to excessive caloric intake. Interestingly, the study found that the association between UPFs and upper-aerodigestive tract cancer was not solely explained by body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio. The presence of additives in UPFs, such as emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners, has also been suggested as potential contributors to the increased cancer risk.
Moreover, researchers suspect that contaminants from UPF packaging and the manufacturing process may play a role in the development of mouth and throat cancer.
