Among them is retired electrical design engineer, 74-year-old Paul Taylor near Sheffield, who has been tightening his belt even further to cope with the reduction in financial support.
Paul, who is just above the threshold for pension credit, will miss out on the winter fuel payment despite facing mobility challenges that qualify him for attendance allowance. He shared, “Even before all this I stopped taking holidays. I normally went abroad a couple of times a year and I have done none of that for the last 18 months. I don’t anticipate that I will be able to do that anymore.” Paul, a widower managing arthritis, underwent an operation recently and now struggles with mobility, relying on his sons to do his weekly shopping.
Similarly, 79-year-old Sarah from Hackney finds herself above the pension credit limit, with most of her income going towards rent and bills. She lamented, “My biggest outgoing cost is rent, which is £963 a month. That’s going up in November to £1,020 for a one-bed flat that is very cold.” Dealing with health issues like high blood pressure and a broken shoulder, Sarah faces additional expenses for taxis and delivered meals due to her limited mobility.
With the government’s decision to cut winter fuel payments, many pensioners like Paul and Sarah are left struggling to make ends meet. Despite receiving some income from pensions, they find themselves unable to afford basic necessities like heavy curtains to keep out the cold draughts. The increase in energy prices adds further pressure, with several hours of heating costing a significant portion of their monthly budget.
In response to criticism, a Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to support pensioners, including the Warm Home Discount and the extension of the Household Support Fund. While some pensioners will still receive the winter fuel payment, many are left facing financial uncertainty and hardships as they navigate the challenges of the winter season with limited resources.
