**Movie Review: Should You Watch Netflix’s ‘The Deliverance’?**
The latest possession horror movie ‘The Deliverance’ on Netflix has been reviewed to see if it’s worth your time. Directed by Lee Daniels, known for films like ‘The Butler’ and ‘Precious’, the movie takes a different turn in his career ladder. Co-scripted by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, the film aims to bring something new to the possession genre tropes.
Inspired by the true story of Latoya Ammons and her family’s haunted experiences in Indiana, ‘The Deliverance’ portrays the demonic occurrences tormenting Ebony (Andra Day), her three children, and her mother Alberta (Glenn Close). Surprisingly, a significant portion of the movie focuses on family drama rather than horror elements, making viewers almost forget it’s a horror flick.
As the possession themes unfold, the film’s quality begins to decline rapidly, resembling various Exorcist knock-offs seen before in the genre. Despite trying to introduce a different exorcism theme with a “deliverance prayer”, the film descends into an over-the-top mess that fails to engage effectively.
However, the standout performance comes from Glenn Close as Alberta, who delivers a memorable and intense portrayal. With flawed characters and limited character development, including Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin, the movie struggles to keep viewers invested.
In conclusion, ‘The Deliverance’ falls short of bringing innovation to a saturated genre, making it a challenging watch. Even with Close’s strong performance, the film fails to deliver a fresh perspective on possession horror movies. Whether you should watch ‘The Deliverance’ depends on your tolerance for rehashed horror tropes and lacklustre execution.
