A man attempted to self-immolate outside the White House in protest of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The incident, which took place on Saturday, saw the man, identified as Samuel Mena Jr, lighting his left arm on fire before being helped by bystanders and police officers. Despite suffering non-life threatening injuries, Mena was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department responded to the incident, with Police Chief Pamela Smith emphasizing the city’s commitment to peaceful protests. Thousands of people globally participated in demonstrations urging Israel to end its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, following last year’s conflicts between Hamas and Israel that resulted in significant Palestinian casualties.
In a related incident in February, a 25-year-old Air Force service member, Aaron Bushnell, also self-immolated outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington DC to protest against the treatment of Palestinians. Tragically, Bushnell succumbed to his injuries. Mena’s protest coincides with the approaching anniversary of a past Hamas terror attack in Israel.
Law enforcement agencies have issued warnings about potential violence surrounding this anniversary, highlighting concerns about extremist activities. Mena, who claimed to be a journalist and was associated with a media outlet, had posted about his plans to attend the pro-Palestine rally on social media.
The phrase “from the river to the sea” featured in Mena’s posts has been a subject of contention, with differing interpretations regarding its meaning. Supporters of Israel view it as antisemitic, while supporters of Palestine see it as a call for Palestinian rights.
Mena, a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, describes himself as a photojournalist for AZFamily Channels 3 and 5. His actions outside the White House have sparked debates and discussions about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the methods used to draw attention to such issues.
