Scots mum fell ‘violently sick’ after medication ran out during brutal 35 hour wait for flight home

A Scottish mother experienced a nightmare journey home after a Ryanair flight delay in Albania left her stranded and falling violently ill due to running out of medication. Amelia Weir, along with numerous other passengers, was stuck in Tirana when their flight to Edinburgh Airport, scheduled for Friday morning at 10.55 am, was delayed until Saturday evening at 9.50 pm. This delay resulted in a gruelling 35-hour wait before they could finally depart.

Amelia, a 32-year-old from East Kilbride, had a particularly harrowing experience as she ran out of essential medication for her hiatus hernia. She found herself lying on an airport bench with cold sweats, feeling unwell and fearing she wouldn’t be able to fly back home. Amelia expressed her frustration at the lack of communication and assistance from Ryanair staff during the ordeal, sharing, “It was an absolute shambles. No one knew what was going on. We were waiting for around 16 hours in the airport on Friday.”

Despite efforts to contact home, the poor internet connection made it challenging for passengers to keep their families informed about the situation. Amelia recounted how her son tearfully informed her of missing his football tournament while she was stuck in Albania. The lack of clear information and changing flight times added to the confusion and frustration amongst passengers.

After being eventually taken to hotels, Amelia described the contrasting experiences of fellow travellers—some were accommodated in nice resorts while others, including herself, ended up in less satisfactory places with no hot water and poor conditions. She emphasised the impact of the prolonged wait on her health, especially due to her medical condition and the absence of necessary medication.

In addition to the physical discomfort, the ordeal resulted in financial losses for Amelia, who had to cover extra expenses during the extended stay in Tirana. Despite being given a meagre €8 voucher by Ryanair, she found it insufficient to meet the costs incurred. Amelia expressed her disappointment with the airline’s handling of the situation and vowed never to fly with Ryanair again, citing the entire experience as horrendous.

Upon finally returning home after the ordeal, Amelia had to spend £100 on a taxi and arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning, exhausted and emotionally drained. Recounting her experience, she highlighted the impact on her personal and professional life, including missing out on jobs and incurring additional expenses beyond what was initially planned.

In response, a Ryanair spokesperson acknowledged the delay was caused by a technical issue with the aircraft and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers. They explained that efforts were made to provide accommodation and keep passengers informed during the unexpected delay.

Amelia’s distressing experience serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the challenges and frustrations passengers can face when dealing with flight disruptions and inadequate communication from airlines. The incident underscores the importance of effective customer service and support, particularly in times of crisis, to ensure passengers’ well-being and peace of mind during their travels.
