Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in cities across Australia in anticipation of the upcoming 7 October anniversary, which marks a year since Israel’s incursion into Gaza. Demonstrations were held in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, with calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon amidst fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
The protesters took to the streets just a day before the anniversary of the 7 October attacks by Hamas in southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1200 casualties. Tensions have been escalating between Israel and Iran as Israeli defense forces ready themselves for potential further operations in Gaza and Lebanon.
Among the demonstrators were children wearing colourful keffiyehs and bearing Palestinian flags, passionately advocating for “Free Palestine.” Many participants urged the Australian government to impose sanctions on Israel, alleging war crimes in the region.
Rafah Chaleb, a Palestinian resident in Australia, expressed frustration with the government’s inaction, stating that their community feels a sense of perpetual sadness. She emphasised the desire for peace and called on Australia to pressure Israel, indicating that even small gestures could significantly benefit their community and help achieve justice.
Another protester, named Kamila, highlighted the humanitarian aspect of the issue, remarking on the collective failure of humanity and emphasising the need for action.
During the demonstrations, four protesters were reportedly arrested by Victoria police for public order-related issues, according to ABC News. The protesters directed criticism towards Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the government’s perceived lack of response to the alleged ongoing atrocities in Gaza, chanting “shame, shame Albanese.”
Since the events of 7 October in Gaza, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported at least 41,870 Palestinians killed and 97,166 injured. Military operations in the West Bank have led to the deaths of at least 678 Palestinians, while operations and airstrikes near southern Beirut have claimed the lives of over 2000 individuals, as per Lebanon’s health ministry.
Emphasising the severity of the situation, millions have been displaced, with tens of thousands seeking refuge in neighbouring Syria following Israel’s expanded invasion of Lebanon. Further casualties occurred as Israel initiated tank deployments in certain areas for the first time in months, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people.
While Israel maintained that its operations targeted Hamas terrorists, Gaza officials accused Israel of striking civilian infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and mosques. The US and other allies have backed Israel’s right to self-defence but have called for efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating into a wider regional war.
Simultaneous demonstrations in major cities globally, with around 40,000 protesting in central London and thousands more gathering in Paris, Cape Town, Jakarta, New York City, and near the White House in Washington, demanded an end to US support for Israeli military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.
