Labour’s election guru, Morgan McSweeney, is set to take over as chief of staff for Sir Keir Starmer following Sue Gray’s departure. Gray resigned, citing concerns about being a distraction to the government amidst the ongoing ‘Partygate’ scandal. The move triggered a broader reshuffle in Number 10, with McSweeney stepping into the key role.
McSweeney, a pivotal figure in Labour’s recent electoral successes, played a significant role in securing the party’s victory earlier this year. A close aide to Sir Keir, he is known for his strategic prowess and influence within the party. The 47-year-old McSweeney hails from County Cork, Ireland, and his political journey began in 1997 when he joined the Labour Party.
Starting at the party’s attack and rebuttal unit in Millbank, McSweeney later worked on organising campaigns for marginal seats during the 2005 election. He continued to make contributions to various roles within the Labour Party, eventually co-founding the Labour Together think tank in 2017 with Steve Reed.
McSweeney’s efforts at Labour Together were focused on steering the party towards the centre and away from more left-wing ideologies associated with Jeremy Corbyn. His strategic acumen and effectiveness in delivering results have been acknowledged, despite facing criticism and navigating internal party dynamics.
Upon Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership victory in 2020, McSweeney assumed the role of chief of staff, swiftly implementing changes within the party to align with the new leadership’s vision. His tenure saw the establishment of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, reflecting a proactive stance on combating issues such as antisemitism.
Following Labour’s triumph in the 2024 general election, McSweeney was appointed as the head of political strategy, further solidifying his position as a key figure in shaping the party’s direction. Reports of tensions between McSweeney and Gray emerged, culminating in Gray’s resignation and McSweeney’s elevation to Downing Street’s chief of staff.
