Three suspects accused of stealing cash from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm have made an appearance in court. The alleged theft, which took place in 2020 but only came to light two years later, involved the sum of $580,000 that was reportedly hidden in a couch on the President’s game farm. The court has decided to postpone the case until next month.
The incident had caused a scandal, with Ramaphosa facing accusations of trying to cover up the theft and the existence of the money. He was accused of various financial crimes, including tax evasion, money laundering, and violating foreign currency laws related to the US dollars found on his property. However, Ramaphosa denied any wrongdoing, stating that the cash came from the legitimate sale of buffaloes at his Phala Phala game farm.
Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing by the reserve bank and a public watchdog, questions surrounding the cash persisted. Ramaphosa survived an impeachment vote in Parliament in 2022, where his African National Congress party used its majority to block the motion. Nonetheless, two opposition parties have since filed papers with South Africa’s highest court to revive impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa, set to be heard next month.
The three suspects involved in the theft are Imanuwela David, Ndilinasho Joseph, and Floriana Joseph. They are facing charges of housebreaking and theft, with David in custody while the Joseph siblings are out on bail. The scandal, dubbed “farmgate,” came at a sensitive time as Ramaphosa was seeking reelection as the leader of his party. Despite winning a second term as South African president with the assistance of opposition lawmakers after the ANC lost its majority, criticism surrounding the Phala Phala scandal lingers.
Nine opposition parties have joined forces with the ANC in a broad governing coalition post the recent election, aiming to address concerns over the scandal.
